JORDAN CLIFFS TRAIL - My Favorite Trail! & 5th Best ACADIA NATIONAL PARK - Climb CLIFFS w/IRON RUNGS
*JORDAN CLIFFS TRAIL Video Guide* POV hike - My Favorite Trail has limited Access due to Peregrine Falcon nesting. It's probably their favorite trail too!!! PLEASE RESPECT WHEN TRAILS ARE CLOSED - THEY ARE CLOSED FOR REASONS National Parks Service can fine $5000 & give 6 months in prison if you don't! JORDAN CLIFFS TRAIL is my favorite trail in the park. It has everything I like about hiking. I hiked it for the first time the day of the attempted coup of Gorbachev in 1991. Climbing SPRING TRAIL, my father took a right turn before PENOBSCOT MOUNTAIN TRAIL. My brother and I cautioned: "Dad! that's not the right trail!" thinking that we would hike a previous path of prior years. My father responded: "I thought we'd do this instead." I'm so glad that he did! JORDAN CLIFFS TRAIL should not be hiked without due consideration. Like other iron rung trails in Acadia, it is not without risk. Being in fair shape is more necessary than BEEHIVE TRAIL with the challenges of the non-rung and main rung sections. For adults AND younger hikers, an understanding of using 3 points of contact & the dangers of not taking this trail seriously should be learned prior to hiking it Beginning on SPRING TRAIL up from Jordan Pond House, it goes up over Around Mountain Carriage Road. Post-crossing, a sign warning of steepness and iron rungs appears. The trail begins its ascent switching between uneven granite and slabs & paths of granite, often with roots, it climbs to a section of bog boards. After this the cliffs begin. The trail rises & falls along these steep granite cliffs. It traverses broken granite, up stone steps through talus & beside the walls of granite. Unassisted climbing & scrambles are paired with wandering along cliffside ledge forest trail of varying width & terrain; at times weaving through rocks, other times popping out onto bare cliffs to reveal Jordan Pond below to the west. Then the iron rungs begin. The trail introduces these aides slowly, each set adding a new level of difficulty. Alternating walking alongside tall granite walls & weaving through boulders, the trail pushes forward until it arrives at 2 downclimbs. The first lowers a hiker 15 feet down a ledge. The second is a rerouting of the original trail path when washed out 20 years ago. An iron handrail guides to a wood staircase carved from a wide pole diagonally dropping another 50 feet. More descent on wood framed stone steps follows. Finally, a turned corner reveals more iron rungs to begin the final, most challenging climb of this trail. The cliffside path becomes narrower and more exposed until it arrives at a section of ledge with no iron rungs to assist. Atop, a glance skyward reveals a cliff with two ladders of rungs and an outcrop for a rung lift over. A short drop assisted by a useful tree followed by a left-hand turn leads to a narrow granite channel with steps followed by an uphill walk with granite wall to the left arriving at the trailhead of PENOBSCOT EAST TRAIL, a short steep route to summit Penobscot Mountain. From here the descent to DEER BROOK TRAIL is short & steep. Roots & rocks make trekking poles helpful to finish before the options awaiting at the trailhead. I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to ACADIA NATIONAL PARK... wicked awesome! FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN the best times are planned properly Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia your hiking plan can include them as contingencies Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park Remember: know your limits so you can push them, and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you AND if you enjoy the tour, your guide does accept likes, subscriptions and comments... (an option of leaving a tip is likely coming soonish) Be Safe! Live your purpose, change your world... Share your knowledge, change the world...
