Team Silent's Divisive Swan Song

Team Silent made some tweaks to the Silent Hill formula with The Room. They got more experimental on the gameplay front. Some of the execution misses the mark, but Silent Hill 4 does some really interesting things that the others do not. Silent Hill 4 has the most "Japanese" feel with its approach to horror. Yet it also has some of the flattest horrors of the series. Silent Hill 4 has an interesting story to piece together. That said, the personal narrative from the past three titles, especially 2, is stripped away. Silent Hill 4 has some of the best enemies in the series, but also the least inspired. You can see that Silent Hill 4 did lay some of the foundations that Kojima would explore with PT a decade later. Silent Hill 4 amps up on backtracking, has a lack of puzzles, introduces limited inventory to its detriment, and has an annoying escort that takes up the back half. It can be quite frustrating. But through this frustration, there are moments of brilliance in Silent Hill 4. While still a divisive title, people have warmed up more to the game over time. Granted, that can also be due to the fact of what came afterward for the series.
