Helen Rytka. The Eighth Victim of the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe. Huddersfield. 1978

On 31st Jan 1978, Helen and Rita Rytka were two teenage prostitutes who had moved from the red light district of Manningham Lane in Bradford to Huddersfield, purely out of the fear created by the Yorkshire Ripper in the Bradford and Leeds area over the previous 3 years, where 7 people had lost their lives. The sisters had created a safe working environment for themselves: go off with clients at the same time, return at the same place 20 minutes later. Unfortunately, on this night, Helen arrived back earlier, and just as a man driving past asked if he could use her services a street away in a timber yard, out of sight of anyone. This was the last decision 18 year old Helen made. The sisters could never have guessed the Yorkshire Ripper had expanded his usual territory to the red light district of Huddersfield.
