You have to eat... drink... and breathe! By the time you turn 10, you'll have already taken about 1 million breaths since that first breath—it's insane! HOW OFTEN DO YOU BREATHE PER DAY? Set a timer for 2 minutes Count how many times you breathe Multiply that number by 720 Leave a comment with how many times you breathe! But the crazy thing is, you don't have to think about breathing at all; it happens automatically...thankfully, otherwise it would be very tiring...Breathing is super important! All the cells in your body constantly need oxygen. They use this oxygen to burn glucose, which releases energy, water, and carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is a waste product, and you then exhale it! Breathing in an entire organism is called respiration, but respiration can also occur at the cellular level, meaning the combustion of, for example, glucose with oxygen. This releases energy. This exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is called "gas exchange." Oxygen and carbon dioxide are gases; you can't see them, but they are present in the air! The gas exchange occurs in the alveoli, which are small spheres in your lungs. Air travels through the mouth or nose, through the trachea, bronchi, and bronchial tubes to the alveoli. During breathing, two things actually happen... 1. You breathe in 2. You breathe out As you breathe, you notice your abdomen and chest expanding and contracting. When you breathe in, your chest expands and your abdomen becomes more rounded. - When you exhale, your chest collapses and your abdomen becomes nice and flat again. This is very important! Because the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs in the lungs, BUT to get that air into your lungs, you need a kind of pump. Your chest and abdomen ARE that pump! WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS DURING BREATHING? INHALING 1. Muscles in the chest contract, ribs rise (chest expands) 2. Diaphragm muscles contract, flattens 3. Chest cavity expands, lungs expand 4. Air is drawn in EXHALING 1. Muscles in the chest relax, ribs fall (chest shrinks) 2. Diaphragm muscles relax, diaphragm expands 3. Chest cavity shrinks, lungs shrink 4.
