Study in Australia: Hard Truths No Agent Will Tell Indian Students
DESCRIPTION There are 1.5 million students in Australia but only 54,000 on-campus beds across 42 universities. If you are planning to study in Australia and you have not thought about accommodation yet, you are already behind. In this episode of The Living Pod, Pinky, Senior Manager of School Engagement and Recruitment at Monash University with over a decade in the education industry, shares what most Indian students get wrong about Australia, including the difference between career services and placement, why your degree alone will not get you a job, how to choose the right education partner, and why starting early on accommodation could save you 30 to 40 percent. KEY HIGHLIGHTS: 1.5 million students in Australia but only 54,000 on-campus beds across 42 universities. Another 100,000 organized off-campus. That leaves over 1 million students fighting for unorganized housing. Not every student can be Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Most people still need formal education to build confidence, interpersonal skills, and career foundations. In Australia and most Western countries, employers are not looking for trainees. They want people ready for work on day one. That is why it is called career services, not placement. Career services at Australian universities start from day one of enrollment. In India, placement typically begins in the final semester. That head start changes everything. Australia's Group of Eight are the top eight research-focused universities, equivalent to Ivy League in the US and Russell Group in the UK. The application process for Australian universities is simpler than most countries. No common application portal, no UCAS, no fixed deadlines for most courses. Apply directly on the university website. Competitive exams like GRE and GMAT are not mandatory for most popular courses in Australia including business, IT, and engineering. You are selected based on grade 12 scores. Australia is being seen as comparatively safer given current geopolitical instability in Europe and the US, according to a senior Monash representative. If you can afford undergrad abroad, go for it. You are younger, more adaptable, and get a longer time at the university to build community and career networks. 60 to 70 percent of the education industry workforce is female. Empathy, service orientation, and counseling skills are natural strengths that drive this. No student gets preference whether they apply directly or through an authorized channel partner. Academic and English requirements remain the same. Always check the university website for authorized representatives before choosing an education agent. Treat it like buying a Mercedes: go to the authorized dealer. Your investment in education is not a transaction. It is a transformation. The skills, resilience, and network you build abroad are the real return. Start accommodation search early. If you start early, you can save 30 to 40 percent on costs compared to booking last minute.
