Crisis en Colombia: Gustavo Petro cuestiona resultados y pone en riesgo eleccion de la Espriella
The political crisis in Colombia has reignited alarm after outgoing President Gustavo Petro questioned the election results and denounced alleged manipulation in favor of President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella. Amid this situation, former Peruvian Foreign Minister Miguel Rodríguez Mackay and Colombian Representative Alejandro Murcia analyzed the risks facing the democratic transition. During an interview on the program “Esta Noche” with Milagros Leiva, Rodríguez Mackay described Petro's attitude as a “tantrum” and questioned why both he and Iván Cepeda are trying to disregard the election results. “He doesn't know how to lose, and of course, the truly disobedient one is Iván Cepeda, and also President Petro,” he stated. According to the international analyst, both are trying to “circumvent democracy” by refusing to accept De la Espriella's victory. The former Foreign Minister maintained that the Colombian Armed Forces must uphold the constitutional order and recognize the elected president when appropriate. “The Armed Forces' only obligation is to obey democracy and the elected president,” he stated. He also emphasized that the transfer of power must occur in accordance with the Constitution, amidst a transition marked by mutual accusations and high political polarization. ARMED FORCES AND TRANSFER AT RISK For his part, Alejandro Murcia, Representative to the Chamber for Colombians abroad and a member of the Democratic Center party, affirmed that Petro's statements have unleashed a political storm in Colombia. According to Murcia, the outgoing president claimed to have evidence of alleged electoral manipulation from abroad, an argument that Murcia considered part of an attempt to remain in power. “It is a clear indication that they intend to find mechanisms to stage a coup and stay in power,” he maintained. Murcia noted that the recently elected Congress will assume its functions on July 20, while President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella is scheduled to take office on August 7. He also asserted that the Attorney General's Office has endorsed the results of the National Electoral Council, which certify De la Espriella's victory. The Colombian representative warned that the main risk would not only be the rejection of the result, but also the possibility of generating chaos and anarchy during the transition. When asked about the role of the Armed Forces, Murcia maintained that they have a long-standing tradition of respecting democratic institutions. "The Armed Forces have a very solid tradition of respect for institutions, of respect for democracy," he stated. He explained that both the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces have indicated that they will act in accordance with the Constitution. #GustavoPetro #IvánCepeda #AbelardoDeLaEspriella #Colombia #CrisisInColombia #ColombiaElections #MiguelRodríguezMackay #AlejandroMurcia #InternationalPolitics #DemocraticTransition
