Wie eine Familie den Charme ihrer alten Villa mit kleinem Budget rettet | ARD Room Tour
Ivonne, Daniel and their son are living a very special dream: their listed villa, built in 1912, has been lovingly furnished down to the last detail – with authentic furniture that cost little more than £100. From the charming table to the opulent mirror, they have brought the historic spirit of the house back to life. Ivonne has had a passion for old things since childhood: whether films, furniture or buildings – she loves everything with history. The couple actually wanted to buy and renovate an old farmhouse. But in 2017, Daniel discovered an old villa from 1912 in Warburg online. Ivonne was sceptical at first: ‘I thought he was crazy, we're not millionaires who can afford a villa.’ But the price fits the family's budget. So the two make an appointment with the estate agent. When they first view the house, they both fall in love with the old villa immediately. Even though it needs renovating, they can both see the house's potential. Ivonne is particularly impressed by the fact that the villa is not ultra-modern. ‘I was really attracted by the fact that the house was in its original condition.’ Shortly afterwards, they sign the purchase agreement. To keep costs down, the couple tried to do some of the work themselves. Ivonne's father helped throughout the entire renovation and took charge of the project. In doing so, the family preserved the historic flair of the house. One thing is particularly important to Ivonne: preserving the historic flair and restoring the villa to its former charm. Instead of following modern trends, Ivonne consistently pursues her vision. Many people advise her to paint the old staircase in the hallway white to make the room appear more welcoming. However, Ivonne decides to have the old wood of the staircase refurbished. She wants to restore the staircase to its original condition from 1912. During the renovation, Ivonne and Daniel realise what it means to buy a listed building. There are requirements from the monument protection authority that they must comply with. For the hallway, the couple decides on new tiles that visually match the period around 1900. Even though the family has been living in the old villa for several years now, Ivonne is still not finished with the interior design. Since she is furnishing the villa exclusively with old furniture that costs less than £100, the search for the perfect cupboard or chest of drawers sometimes takes longer: ‘I can't just pop into a furniture store, that's not possible.’ Some pieces in the house are only temporary placeholders for Ivonne, which will disappear as soon as she finds the perfect piece of furniture or decorative element. With great attention to detail, a lot of patience and a small budget, Ivonne and Daniel have breathed new life into the old villa while still preserving its old charm.
