Rodgers & Hart's "Manhattan" with restored audio.
This wonderful rendition of "Manhattan" was performed by Ruth Tester and Allan Gould in the Paramount short film MAKERS OF MELODY, filmed in Astoria, Queens in 1929. I am a sucker for waif-like ingenues like Ruth Tester. This is her only film appearance, but she did follow up this assignment by appearing in the third Garrick Gaieties of 1930. "Manhattan" had been introduced by Sterling Holloway and June Cochran in the first Garrick Gaieties in 1925. Ruth Tester also appeared on Broadway in The Second Little Show, The Gang's All Here, The Ramblers, and several other shows. I have performed a major restoration on the sound to eliminate the pops, squeals and drop-outs. The song, by Rodgers and Hart, is now in the public domain.
