Are First Nations Canadians exempt from paying income tax on employment income? First Nations Canadians with Indian status are not automatically exempt from paying income tax on employment income simply because they have Indian status. If they are employed off reserve for a company that conducts its revenue-generating activity off reserve land and have no real connection to reserve land, then typically First Nations individuals must pay employment income tax like everyone else.
