Warum ist die Hälfte Argentiniens leer?
Why is half of Argentina empty? Argentina is quite bizarre. While millions of people in Buenos Aires are celebrating their qualification for the final tonight, the southern half of the country is practically deserted because hardly anyone lives there. In this one metropolitan area alone, roughly a third of all Argentinians are crammed into a small space, while thousands of kilometers further south, you can drive for hours along empty roads without encountering a single soul. Yet Argentina is one of the largest countries in the world, with an area of almost 2.8 million square kilometers, nearly eight times the size of Germany. And the closer you look, the stranger it becomes. The country stretches approximately 3,700 kilometers from north to south, a distance greater than from Berlin to North Africa. At the very southern tip lies Ushuaia, often touted as the southernmost city in the world, closer to Antarctica than to its own capital. Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia, rises almost 7,000 meters in the west. Add to that the curiosities you'd hardly expect to find in South America. In the vast expanse of the country, there are villages where Welsh is still spoken. There's a suspiciously large number of Germans, and the country's name derives from the Latin word for silver, even though silver was never actually mined there. So it's high time we took a closer look at Argentina. Why does almost the entire country live in a single corner in the northeast? Why does the enormous south remain almost uninhabited to this day, making it seemingly impossible to build larger cities there? What does a 19th-century military campaign have to do with it, and how does the government intend to change that for the first time? We'll explore all these fascinating questions in today's video!
