20 Years of Seed Grown Martagon Lilies | Cold Climate Garden
In this video, I'm sharing everything I've learned about Martagon lilies over the past 20 years of growing them from seed in my Zone 3 Saskatchewan garden. Martagons are the ultimate cold-hardy lily—they thrive in part shade, naturalize beautifully, and require very little care once established. I'll walk you through: 🌱 What makes a Martagon a true lily (and why daylilies aren't lilies at all!) 🌱 How to grow Martagon lilies from seed (delayed hypogeal germination explained simply) 🌱 Scale propagation – a faster way to multiply your bulbs 🌱 Where to plant them – sun vs. shade, soil preferences, and mulching tips 🌱 My 23-year seed-growing journey – from first seeds to a naturalized woodland garden 🌱 How to divide overcrowded clumps – and when to do it 🌱 Scarlet lily beetle prevention – what I do to stay vigilant (even though I've been lucky so far!) Martagon lilies (Division 2) are sometimes called Turk's Cap lilies because of their nodding, reflexed flowers. They bloom in late June here in east-central Saskatchewan, well before Asiatic lilies. Their whorled foliage and delicate fragrance make them one of the most elegant members of the lily family. Welcome to MySaskGarden. If you're a gardener in zone 5 or colder (geographically much of Canada!), you're in the right place. I prove that you can have a great garden, even with a short season and deep freezes. If you're new here, this channel is dedicated entirely to helping you grow a beautiful and productive garden in a short-season, cold-climate. I cover everything from starting seeds indoors to dealing with early frosts and making the most of every gardening day. Hardy shrubs & perennials, colourful annuals, fruits & short season vegetables - I grow them all!
