Welcome to the SMC News Update for October 2025! 🎓✨ In this episode, we bring you highlights from the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-Atlantic University, featuring major academic and professional milestones. The PhD 9 in Media and Communication candidates kicked off their orientation online, while MSc FT18 students experienced their first intensive week with inspiring guest speakers from MTN Nigeria and Enterprise Life. The MSc FT17 class successfully defended their projects in a two-panel viva session. The Modular MSc in Film Production (FP7) students began their journey with a focus on screenplay development, and the Professional Education Department hosted several impactful programmes, including Advanced Business Communication, Creative Presentation and Public Speaking, and the MTN-MIP Cohort 4 final training week. We also revisited the SMC Discourse featuring broadcast legend Bimbo Oloyede, and the SMC Filmmakers’ Forum, where industry leaders Biodun Stephen, Victor Sanchez Aghahowa, and Ema Edosio Deelen shared insights on crafting powerful Nollywood stories. Dr. Nwachukwu Egbunike represented SMC across Africa—attending the Forum of Internet Freedom in Africa (Namibia) and the British Academy Academic Writing Workshop (Angola)—while also lecturing on Surveillance and Data Privacy. Dr. Chike Mgbeadichie appeared on Deutsche Welle (DW) to discuss Nigeria’s adoption of Mandarin and China’s growing cultural influence. Meanwhile, Mr. Lawrence Akande and Mr. Sam Igbedion presented papers on diversity and inclusivity in Nollywood at the Lead City University Multidisciplinary Conference. Big congratulations to Rehwa-Oma Chikere, who won Best Comedy at the Canada International Mobile Film Festival (CIMFF 2025) for her short film Corper’s Journey! 👏 And to Segun Oke, PhD 2 class, for successfully defending his thesis on NCDC’s social media strategy for health communication in Nigeria. ✨ That’s all for SMC News October 2025!
