Yoga's Oldest Figure Was Buried in Denmark. Nobody Knows Why.

2,000 years ago, someone carved an antlered figure sitting cross-legged among animals and buried it in a Danish bog. It has a twin in India twice as old — the Pashupati seal, the oldest known image of a yoga asana on Earth. This is the story of why the greatest yoga relic has a double in an Iron Age bog in northern Europe, and the single idea that connects them. The Pashupati seal was carved around 4,000 years ago in Mohenjo-daro, a city of the Indus Valley with planned streets and covered drains. It shows a figure in Mula Bandhasana, the root lock — one of the most technical postures in all of yoga. The archaeologist John Marshall named the figure Pashupati, "Lord of the Animals," still one of the names of Shiva today. The Danish twin sits on a hammered silver cauldron pulled from a bog in Jutland in 1891. We even know its name — Cernunnos, the horned one — from a single carved stone uncovered beneath Notre-Dame in Paris. The Celts knew him. The people of the Indus knew him. This horned Lord of Animals appears in nearly all ancient sources, including a painted figure in a cave in southern France known as The Sorcerer, around 15,000 years old. Who is this Lord of Animals? The clearest answer is a dream: one mind, dreaming the whole thing — and you are a figure in it.
