Cullybackey Station , Old Cullybackey Road & Ballymena Road Level Crossings.10/2/23 (Before Upgrade)
Cullybackey Station , Old Cullybackey Road & Ballymena Road Level Crossings before the start of upgrade works. Friday 10th February 2023 List of train movements seen in this video. Arriving into Cullybackey on board 4016. 4016 Departs Cullybackey Station with the 16:10 Great Victoria Street to Londonderry Service. 3017 Is seen passing Old Cullybackey Road Level Crossing with the 16:46 Belfast Central / Lanyon Place to Coleraine Service. 3020 Is seen passing Ballymena Road Level Crossing with the 16:38 Londonderry to Great Victoria Street Service. 3001 Is seen at Cullybackey Station / Level Crossing with the delayed 17:46 Belfast Central / Lanyon Place to Coleraine Service. The driver indicator signals for the 2 level crossings to the north side of Cullybackey Station activate as 4017 pulls into the station with the 17:38 Londonderry to Great Victoria Street Service. These level crossings at Cullybackey were unique. It was the only place on Northern Ireland Railways that had AHB-DM (Automatic Half Barrier Distant Monitored) crossings with a signal located a certain distance before each crossing that displayed a flashing white aspect to the driver of the approaching train indicating that the road traffic signals on the crossing ahead had activated and the barriers had lowered this system was in use here due to the 3 crossings being located within such a short distance of each other. The white flashing aspect signals can be seen several times in the video. It is believed this may have been the only location on any UK railway that had this system. Northern Ireland Railways did also have a few AOCL crossings (Automatic open crossing locally monitored) many years ago for a short while but these got upgraded to AHB. These level crossings and driver indicator signals were decommissioned at the end of traffic on the 10th February for the upgrade works to begin. The crossings are being upgraded to MCB-CCTV (Manually Controlled Barriers Monitored by CCTV) and will be controlled from Coleraine Cabin. The flashing white driver indicator signals are being replaced with LED colour light signals again controlled from Coleraine Cabin. One of the new signals can be seen in the clip of 4016 departing the station. The upgrade works are due to be completed on the 19th February and train services will resume on the 20th.
