North Korea recently showcased a demonstration of martial arts by its soldiers as a pre-ceremony event for the National Defense Development Exhibition. The footage featured scenes of soldiers smashing bricks, cutting iron chains with their bare hands, bending rebar, and breaking roof tiles or bricks by striking them with a hammer. Resembling a stunt show, the video drew reactions from foreign media, describing it as bizarre and warning against imitating the techniques at home. North Korea frequently presents martial arts demonstrations; it was also showcased as part of a mass gymnastics performance during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit two years ago. In 2016, when inter-Korean relations were at their worst, Chairman Kim Jong-un visited a special operations battalion directly under the 525th Military Unit; at that time, North Korea revealed its combatants' martial arts training alongside a plan to strike the Blue House (South Korean presidential residence). In North Korea, martial arts training is conducted in almost all units, with special forces receiving particularly intensive training. An institution called the Martial Arts Research Institute develops the movements and techniques, distributing them to each branch of the military under the name "Juche Martial Arts."
