백령도에 백상아리가 나타났다?! 한반도를 위협하는 1˚C의 비밀 | KBS 스페셜 “백령도 백상아리의 미스터리” (KBS 100919 방송)

KBS Special "The Mystery of the White Sharks on Baengnyeong Island" (Aired on September 19, 2010) ※ This video aired in 2010 and may differ from the current situation. ☐ Abnormal Temperatures and the Appearance of a White Shark on Baengnyeong Island The Korean Peninsula has recently experienced unprecedented weather events. From the cold snap in April to the summer heatwave and the late autumn monsoon... Amidst this ongoing climate anomaly, an unusual event occurred on Baengnyeong Island in August 2009. A white shark, previously unseen north of the Boryeong Daecheon coast in the West Sea, appeared and attacked a seal on Baengnyeong Island. This was the first recorded footage of a white shark predation in Korea. How did a white shark, estimated to be 4 meters long, end up on the coast of Baengnyeong Island, so far north of Boryeong Daecheon? Around the same time, a white shark also appeared at the crowded Eulwangni Beach, causing shock and fear. "During my research period from 1996 to 2008, great white sharks were primarily spotted in May and June along the coasts of South Chungcheong and North Jeolla Provinces. The appearance of a great white shark in Baengnyeong Island, so far north, in August, is a mystery." Professor Choi Yoon / Department of Marine Biotechnology, Kunsan National University ☐ The Mystery of the Baengnyeong Island Great White Shark The great white shark is the king of the sea and the most feared predator among sharks. Unlike sharks that commonly attack fish, the great white shark preys on mammals and is a source of fear for humans. Why is the appearance of a great white shark on Baengnyeong Island such a mystery to experts? The production team visited Cape Town, South Africa, the world's most abundant great white shark. The great white shark we encountered in the waters we ventured into was terrifying. Its triangular, serrated teeth and bite force, six times stronger than that of a lion, were enough to instill fear. What the production team noticed here was that the great white sharks in Cape Town are primarily seen in winter, when the water temperature is 14-15˚C. Unlike other sharks, great white sharks thrive in temperate waters, not tropical waters, and their ideal habitat is 14-15˚C. How did these great white sharks appear in Baengnyeong Island and Eulwang-ri in the sweltering heat of August? ☐ A Shadow of Terror Looming over the Korean Peninsula “I saw a huge shadow under the water. I desperately hoped it was a seal or a dolphin. But suddenly, a large fin emerged from the water and came towards us.” Asim / Great White Shark Victim in Cape Town, South Africa Asim, a former swimmer and lifeguard living in Cape Town, South Africa, lost one of his legs in a sudden attack by a great white shark that surged up from the water. In 2005, a female diver fishing for abalone near Gayido Island in the West Sea was attacked by a great white shark, losing ligaments in her left leg and even cartilage deep within her bone. Now, great white sharks have begun attacking the Korean Peninsula. Could there be another reason driving their migration? ☐ The Key to the Mystery: The 1˚C Secret Threatening the Korean Peninsula Another reason for attracting great white sharks to Cape Town, South Africa, is the city's population of seals, a mammal of some 64,000. However, Baengnyeong Island's seal population is only around 200, and their numbers are steadily declining. The production team focused on another mammal, the finless porpoise, discovered in the stomach of a great white shark caught in the Korean Peninsula. While the finless porpoise is listed as an endangered species in China, nearly 30,000 live in the West Sea. What brought these finless porpoises to the West Sea? What are the massive changes in the West Sea that have affected even the apex predator, the great white shark? The production team investigating the mystery of the great white sharks in Baengnyeong Island faced a shocking truth that threatens the entire ecosystem. Considering that the human body temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius rises by 1˚C, a temperature of 37.5˚C could actually cause symptoms similar to the early stages of a cold. Similarly, a 1˚C rise in water temperature across the Korean Peninsula over 40 years could cause profound changes. Dr. Yoon Seok-hyun / National Institute of Fisheries Science What does a 1˚C rise in water temperature in the West Sea of the Korean Peninsula over 40 years mean? How will the massive wave of climate change, starting from wildlife ecosystems, shape our future? KBS Special: The Mystery of the Great White Sharks in Baengnyeong Island reveal the truth behind this 1˚C rise in water temperature. #GreatWhiteShark #BaengnyeongIsland #ClimateChange #AbnormalTemperature #Shark #Environment
