Sentencing of South African officers in murder case

(11 Nov 2015) Eight South African ex-police officers convicted of murdering a Mozambican national were each sentenced to 15 years in prison by the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday. Judge Bert Bam said the eight men did not show remorse during the trial, a factor that counted in their sentences. Bam said he found that life imprisonment would not be appropriate because the eight police officers had excellent service records. Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia, 27, was tied and dragged behind a police van on 26 February, 2013 in Daveyton, east of Johannesburg. He later died in police custody. Police had arrested Macia for an alleged traffic infringement. The death of Macia made international headlines after an amateur footage showing Macia being dragged through the streets of Daveyton went viral on YouTube, sparking outrage in South Africa and abroad.
