The Manpei Hotel is a classic hotel with a history spanning over a century, intertwined with the summer resort town of Karuizawa. In 2024, it celebrated its 130th anniversary since its founding in 1894 (Meiji 27), and underwent extensive renovations and reconstruction, reopening in the same year. The Manpei Hotel, along with the Nikko Kanaya Hotel and the Hakone Fujiya Hotel, is considered one of the "Big Three" of historic classic hotels. It has been a favorite of many famous figures, including Togo Heihachiro in the Meiji era, Muroo Saisei and Hori Tatsuo in the Taisho era, and Mishima Yukio and John Lennon in the Showa era. Enjoy Karuizawa beer and light snacks at the cafe terrace, famous for John Lennon's favorite apple pie and royal milk tea. Stay in Room 352, the Usui Suite, which features a terrace. Enjoy the summer resort atmosphere in this spacious 90㎡ room. We had dinner in the elegant "Main Dining Room," which boasts a magnificent, opulent design with a coffered ceiling and beautiful stained glass. The menu, featuring floral patterns passed down from the Taisho era, was also lovely. On the way back, we strolled through Old Karuizawa Ginza, less than a 10-minute walk away. We visited some of Karuizawa's representative long-established bakeries, including "Boulangerie Asanoya Karuizawa Kyudo Main Store," "French Bakery," and "Chosumire-sha Karuizawa Nouveau." We also visited the "Hyōhakusan Jingūji Temple," where a weeping cherry tree estimated to be 400 years old was in full bloom. Finally, we visited the "Tetsuko Kuroyanagi Museum." It displays costumes designed by Hanae Mori that Tetsuko Kuroyanagi wore on "The Best Ten." There are also gorgeous kimonos, beaded bags, and a cameo collection. Also on display were lithographs of "Cassignol," a brand for which Tetsuko Kuroyanagi was a great admirer and modeled numerous times.
