The founder members were Naquib Khan, Pilu Khan, Ehsanul Islam (Motto), Mamun, and Feisal Siddiqi (Bogey). Since the inception, the band has been instrumental in developing the trend of blending eastern melodies with western harmonics in original Bengali music. In a very short time, the band became very popular both for their original Bangla songs as well as for Anglo-American cover songs, which they perform in various stage shows. ‘Renaissance’ has released four audio albums: In 1988, Renaissance released its first album as self-titled “Renaissance” of original Bangla and English songs, which acquired enormous critical acclaim and commercial success. Renaissance has enjoyed the position of a front ranking band on the Bangladesh music scene since then. A few songs from the first album -- Bhalo Laage Jotsna Raate, O Nodirey Tui Jash Kothaire, Aaccha Keno Manushgulo, Orey Chotto Belar Shathi -- became super hits cross a wide age range of music lovers. In 1993, Renaissance released its second album of original Bangla songs titled "Tritiyo Bishwo", which was also a critical and commercial success. A few songs from this album - Hridoy Kada Matir Kono Murti Noy, Beche Thaka Niye Jaader Juddho, Chirodiny Bhabte Paaro, Aaj Je Shishu, Aaro Deshot Jaiyo Tui, Tritio Bishwo - touched the hearts of people and enjoyed unprecedented popularity. Aaj Je Shishu was included in a CD produced by UNICEF to promote its activities around the world. In 1998, Renaissance released its third album - "Ekattorer Renaissance" - a remarkable reworking of Bangla and English songs broadcast from Shwadhin Bangla Betar Kendro which were closely associated with Bangladesh's Liberation War of 1971. The new version of these historical songs, arranged and performed in band format, was well received by the post-1971 generation who were hitherto unaware of the tremendous impact that these patriotic songs had on the muktijoddhas (freedom fighters) of the Liberation War. The release of this album took Renaissance to a new height and brought it a huge appreciation from the intellectual community. In 2004, Renaissance released its fourth album, “Ekush Shotokey Renaissance”, with original Bangla songs. In this album, the band experimented successfully with the blending of brass instruments (saxophones, trumpets, trombone, flute and harmonica) played by a group of expatriate musicians based in Dhaka into the band’s signature Bangla melodies. This gave us a new dimension to the band’s music and the album was awarded as ‘Best Band Album of the Year 2004’ by CityCell-Channel i Music Award. Besides its original compositions, there is another side of the band. Since the start, Renaissance has been the Dhaka’s number one band playing its own versions, rich in improvisation, of Western rock/jazz/blues/reggae/soul classics. Renaissance enjoys the distinction of being highly successful in both the Bengali and English market segments of Bangladesh’s discerning music audience. With about 400 Anglo-American songs (from the last 75 years) in its repertoire, Renaissance is a tight ‘R&B’, ‘Reggae’ oriented band that can make a dance floor sizzle and also plays jazz and blues sets occasionally.
