At the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he was considered a sure bet for a medal, but unfortunately missed the tournament due to the Japanese boycott. He was nicknamed the "phantom gold medalist." His brilliant achievements led him to join New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1980. He later partnered with Riki Choshu and Jumbo Tsuruta, winning various titles in various organizations. He fought many fierce battles against world-class wrestlers. In June 2019, his right leg was amputated due to gangrene. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation and plans to participate as a torchbearer in the Olympic Torch Relay in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture on March 29, 2020.
