Chahdortt Djavann, a French writer, novelist, and essayist born in Iran, offers a fresh perspective on immigration. Her books explore themes such as identity, exile, French language and culture, psychoanalysis, the Islamist system, immigration to France, and prostitution. She comes from a very old aristocratic lineage in northern Iran, the granddaughter and daughter of a pasha. She grew up in Tehran, but the rise of Khomeini forced her to flee her country. Upon arriving in France in 1993, she learned French at the age of 26 and then took on a series of odd jobs to support herself before enrolling at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS). Her novel, "Et ces êtres sans pénis!" (And These Beings Without Penises!), was described by Le Monde as possessing "irresistible intelligence and humor." Her numerous articles and opinion pieces in newspapers, as well as her books, have been translated into several languages. In 2003, she received the Grand Prix de la Laïcité (Grand Prize for Secularism). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
