Vinh Long Airport was built by the US military in the 1960s in Vinh Long City. This is a large-scale airport and a joint US-Republic of Vietnam military base. On New Year's Eve of 1968, Vinh Long Airport was attacked by the Liberation Army. Although it caused a lot of damage to the US-RVN side, 43 out of 46 Liberation Army soldiers participating in the battle were killed.
