After spending time teaching, he decided to start his first business: a stockbroking firm called "Inversora Bursátil." Later, he would meet his true love: Soumaya Domit, his wife and partner, with whom he started the "Carso" business group, named after the first three letters of his name, Carlos, and the first two of Soumaya. Remembering the lessons he learned from his father, he lived modestly with his growing family, reinvesting all his profits in consolidating the business group. Over the following years, they would begin a strategic expansion by acquiring undervalued and poorly managed companies to help them improve their finances. Their strategy was simple: acquire the companies at a very good price and then invest in improving the quality of their processes and products to turn them around and make them more profitable. In 1990, the business group would face its most important opportunity: the privatization of the state-owned telephone company Telmex, and the possibility of winning the bidding process for its purchase among several investors. Achieving this was no easy feat. To achieve this, the Carso Group had to seek out several Mexican, American, and French partners, but ultimately won the concession and acquired 53% of the company's shares. Little by little, over the following years, it acquired the entire company from the other shareholders, leaving the Carso Group as the sole owner. However, Telmex was in very poor financial shape at the time of its acquisition. The technology it used was outdated, and the telephone networks were severely flawed. Mexicans had lost confidence in the company, and its market share was too low. It was thanks to Carlos's business acumen that the company began to improve its infrastructure, train its employees, provide better service, and focus on an industry that showed great potential: mobile telephony.
