We all know about Rani Lakshmi Bai, the Queen of Jhansi who fought for independence of India during the Revolt of 1857. Her story is an inspiration for all of us. Rani Lakshmi Bai, popularly known as Jhansi Ki Rani, was born as Manikarnika in Bhadaini District of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Her father trained her as a warrior when she was quite young. When she became the Queen of Jhansi, she fought for its independence against the British, who acquired Jhansi as per their policy of Doctrine of Lapse. Dressed as a man, Rani Lakshmibai fought a fierce battle with the British in Gwalior, and was martyred in combat. "From the bards of Bundela we have heard this story.. She fought valiantly like a man, she was the Queen of Jhansi." Who doesn't know the heroic tales of Rani Lakshmibai! When we mention her, we go back to our childhood and start humming the lines of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. Born in 1835, in the house of Moropant Tamba, at Bhadaini in Varanasi district, Rani Lakshmibai's childhood name was Manikarnika. Her name was big, so her family started calling her Manu, who later became known as Rani Lakshmibai. In childhood, the shadow of Maa Bhagirathi Bai was removed from his head. His father Moropant Tamba was to raise Manu as both mother and father. He never let Manu feel the lack of a mother, and raised him like a son. He taught Manu martial arts along with his studies. Gradually, Manu became proficient in horseback riding, fencing and archery. Soon Manu became skilled, like a warrior. Manu was only 13-14 years old when she was married to Gangadhar Rao, the king of Jhansi. They also had a son, but he died at the age of four months. To save his kingdom from the British, Raja Gangadhar Rao adopted a child. But Gangadhar Rao, passed away the day after the baby was named. Because she had no children of her own, the British government issued a decree for Queen Lakshmibai to leave Jhansi. For her freedom, Rani Lakshmibai fought against the British and died heroically in the battle. Let us hear the story of Rani Laxmibai's courage, bravery and patriotism.
