🔸Today’s offering features a video recording of 1980’s Doordarshan broadcast, in which Dr. M Balamuralikrishna (BMK) presents a composition of Kaiwara Amara Nareyana – Vēnkaṭāchala Ramaṇa, tuned in the rāga Harikāmbhóji. 🔹He is accompanied by a set of artistes who comprise the orchestra for this rendition. The accompanying artistes in this orchestral setting are: 🌷 Veena: Smt. Vishalam Venkatachalam 🌷 Violin: Sri. Annavarapu Ramaswamy 🌷 Flute: Sri. Prapancham Sitharam 🌷 Mridangam: Sri. Dandamudi Ramamohan Rao 🌷 Tabla: Sri. Chandra Mohan 🌷 Tanpura: Artiste to be identified. 🔸BMK seems to have donned multiple roles for this video recording. As a tunesmith, he has tuned the composition, a Telegu one, in the rāga Harikāmbhóji. As a compère, he introduces Kaiwara Amara Nareyena with some relevant details. As a singer, he has sung the composition about which we will have some more to say. As a conductor of the orchestra, he is thoroughly enjoying it even as he renders the composition. 🔹BMK’s rendition of the composition is noteworthy for a few reasons. The composition itself, both for its lyrics and the import, has been presented for maximum impact as an exquisite piece of light music. The flavour of Harikāmbhóji has been brought out in a manner, that will not be an exaggeration, if it is said to be a reference for how the rāga should be when used for light music. 🔸In the three Charanams of the composition, there is a point in each of them when the high point of Harikāmbhóji is liltingly brought out. At that point there is perfect harmony on the stage among the singing, the different instruments and the percussion.
