For three years, an Italian-Turkmen team excavated this city of the dead, saving more than 15,000 tombs from destruction and looting. Inside, exceptional offerings were discovered: gold and silver vessels, exquisite jewelry, and precious objects. At the end of these initial excavations, the discoveries are becoming increasingly spectacular. The organization of the site and the increasing refinement of the offerings bear witness to the evolution of the peoples of Central Asia, established along the trade route between East and West.
