The French education system is in crisis. For years, academic standards have been steadily declining, with students unable to write a text without spelling or syntax errors. Even graduates struggle to construct a coherent argument, a perfect illustration of a dramatic decline in the quality of learning in France. This deterioration affects all classes of society, and the intellectual future of the new generations is now compromised. Successive reforms have only worsened the situation, giving way to a mass education system where the priority is quantity, to the detriment of quality. Students leave school without the necessary foundations to structure their thoughts or properly master the French language, which seriously weakens the country's cultural and social foundation. This phenomenon creates a generation without reference points, deprived of the essential tools to develop critical thinking. This inability to master the fundamentals of the language is a major problem for the future of France. Language proficiency is essential for understanding and expressing oneself in the face of current issues; widespread ignorance makes the population more vulnerable to manipulation. This race to the bottom produces more docile citizens, incapable of questioning dominant narratives. At the same time, social media imposes a model of success based on superficiality and appearances. Media figures, often lacking real content, capture the attention of and influence younger generations. This model of upward mobility impoverishes the intellectual aspirations of new generations, who are driven to value image at the expense of reflection and knowledge. This shift threatens the country's intellectual and cultural identity. Without a response to this glorification of mediocrity, France could find itself bled dry, with generations incapable of meeting the economic and geopolitical challenges of tomorrow. The current downward spiral could well cause a deep social divide, further weakening the country in the years to come.
