Jerusalem was under siege, the danger was known, and yet God allowed time: from the 10th of Tevet until the 17th of Tammuz, and then another three weeks until the 9th of Av. Time to reflect, to unite, to do teshuvah (repentance). But baseless hatred, disputes, pride, and clan wars prevented the people from uniting. The enemies then entered Jerusalem, and the Temple was finally destroyed. The 17th of Tammuz is not just a day of fasting. It is a day for personal reflection. Do I know how to forgive? Do I judge others favorably? Do I allow small hurts to create deep divisions? Do I do enough to bring peace to those around me? The Temple has not yet been rebuilt, for we still have to repair what destroyed it: hatred, discord, and a lack of unity.
