Adjustable Motor Mount for Carbon Fiber Mini-Z Buggy
Today we are going to look at this highly modified Mini-Z buggy, equipped with Sai Lai's carbon fiber chassis. Sai, not done with the chassis conversion, recently created a new alloy motor mount. He shipped me a couple to play with (thanks!). The package had arrived just before tariff was going to hit. Let's install it and see if it's any good. The motor mount comes with a set of parts. Most people won't need to use the smaller carbon fiber pieces. They are only used if you plan to use the original Kyosho mount with this replacement top plate. This motor mount is made of metal, and feels quite sturdy. Unlike Kyosho's design, this uses screws to secure the motor. This means basically all 3rd party motors will work. Another nice feature is that the motor position is adjustable without mounting plates. This will allow more pinion gear options. Let's start disassembling the buggy, starting from the motor mount followed by the top plate. Now I got the original top plate removed, we can compare the old vs new. The new one got 4 additional counter sunk holes for the motor mount. The metal piece will go here as you would expect. The interior unanodized surface will be obscured once a motor is installed. Also, it's easier to see why we won't need those small carbon pieces mentioned earlier. We do not need to latch the Kyosho mount anymore. A reminder to use some thread lock as a lot of screws go into metal threads on this chassis. Once everything is secure, I will need to adjust gear mesh for this pair of 14T and 35T gears. The buggy is now back in one piece. The metallic red motor mount looks great together with the other red parts. Adjusting for the right gear mesh, as usual, was always a bit tedious. The sweet spot was narrow. Also, in order to adjust the gear mesh, the rear wing mount must be removed first. The gears are also more exposed since there's no longer a cover over them. But the positives are significant. I have access to more gearing options, as well as motor choices. That's amazing. The sweet sound of brushless power. I'm pretty impressed by the machining work on the motor mount. Everything is perfectly aligned and centered. You can also get the motor mount in black if you prefer. The color will certainly blend in more easily with the buggy body. Even though my eyes are starting to struggle with tiny RC stuff, it's just so much fun to focus and make things work.
