DO NOT ATTEMPT In this video, I was preparing my manikin head for a retouch video, and luckily, I recorded it. I was working on relaxing on the mid lengths and ends and leaving the roots undone. In the process, I made a discovery that I thought I should share. I understand that this is yak hair, and the results aren't the same as human hair, but there's still something to be gathered from this experience. Again, the purpose of these videos was to show the correct application of a hair relaxer, not so much the result - a tutorial. In this video I decided to use a no-lye relaxer and I encountered some issues: the hair wasn't smooth but rough to the touch, a dry coarse feeling and it seemed almost impossible to neutralize the no lye relaxer without using a chelating shampoo. A chelating shampoo removes mineral deposits from the hair, which is really helpful when using it on hair treated with a no lye relaxer. No lye relaxers deposit calcium buildup similar to hard water. This buildup can coat the hair, making it difficult for shampoo to lather and cleanse the hair throughly and conditioners to penetrate the hair to condition the hair thoroughly. This can lead to hair becoming dry, brittle and ultimately lead to breakage This is where a chelating shampoo comes in to remove the buildup.
