Hello fellow plant lovers! In this video, we'll discuss a smart way to propagate Chokanan mango seedlings by utilizing failed grafts. Don't be too quick to throw them away, because it turns out we can still use them! Often when we use grafting techniques, not all grafts are successful. Some dry out, don't join, or stop growing. But did you know? The rootstock from these failed grafts still has great potential to become new seedlings. The first step is to select a graft that failed, but the rootstock is still healthy. The characteristics are that the stem is still green, not rotten, and the roots are still strong. This is important because healthy roots will determine the future growth of the seedlings. Next, we cut off the top of the failed graft. Cut neatly using a sharp tool to avoid damaging the plant tissue. Leave a rootstock about 20 to 30 cm tall. The next step is to wait for new shoots to emerge from the rootstock. Usually, shoots will begin to grow within a few weeks. Select the healthiest and strongest shoots and let them grow into the main stem. When the shoots are large enough, we can re-graft them with quality Chokanan mango scions. Make sure the scions are taken from a parent tree that has proven to produce good, sweet, and productive fruit. The grafting technique can be either bud grafting or cleft grafting. The important thing is that the cambium between the rootstock and scion must meet for the grafting process to be successful. After grafting, wrap the graft with special plastic or parafilm to keep it moist and protect it from rain. Place it in a shady area, out of direct sunlight. Subsequent care is crucial. Ensure the plant receives adequate water, but not too much. Also, protect it from pests and diseases that can disrupt growth. In about 2 to 4 weeks, the graft will usually begin to show signs of success, such as the emergence of new shoots from the scion. This method not only saves on the cost of purchasing seedlings but also transforms material previously considered unsuccessful into something valuable.
