Joseph Haydn / Piano Trio No. 41 in E-flat minor, Hob. XV:31

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Piano Trio No. 41 in E-flat minor, Hob. XV:31 (1797) 00:00 - Andante cantabile 09:37 - Allegro Beaux Arts Trio: Menahem Pressler (piano), Isidore Cohen (violin), & Bernard Greenhouse (violoncello). "As in the the Piano Sonatas in C, H. XVI:48 and in D, H. XVI:51, Haydn is content to give only two movements to this piano trio. This late work also demonstrates strikingly the wide-ranging key structure used at this stage by Haydn. For instance, in the closing movement in E-flat major we are led at one point into E major. It is also worth mentioning that, in 1803, when asked by Prince Esterházy to write a sonata for the music-loving wife of the French General Moreau, Haydn simply sent off immediately the E-flat minor Trio in the form of a sonata for violin and piano; he obviously regarded the cello part as dispensable -- and, indeed, as was usual for the time, it is for the most part in unison with the piano bass." - Hans Christoph Worbs Painting: A Woman in Turkish Dress, Jean-Étienne Liotard
