Why Does Art Matter? A Conversation with Kendell Geers, Michael Borremans and Elise Caluwaerts
Recently awarded the Flemish Government's Medal of Honour for his outstanding contribution to the international cultural profile of Flanders, Michael Borremans joined Kendell Geers at TheMerode for a special edition of Art Matters. Hosted by Belgo-South African artist Kendell Geers, Art Matters is TheMerode's recurring salon exploring the ideas that shape contemporary art through conversations with leading cultural voices. This edition centres on French Painting, Borremans' ninth solo exhibition with David Zwirner and his first at the gallery's Paris location, marking his first solo exhibition in France in over twenty years. Joined by internationally acclaimed Belgian soprano Elise Caluwaerts, the conversation explores beauty and ambiguity, the role of the artist today, and the question at the heart of the series: Why does art matter?
