It was created on December 20, 1995. The municipality was separated from Paranaguá. It is located on the coast, 100 km from the capital Curitiba. Its main activities are tourism, commerce, fishing, and handicrafts, with port activities expected in the future. Around 1983, attempts at emancipation began, then called "Praias de Paranaguá." After several attempts, the process became a reality. Then, in 1995, a large mobilization was held, which received popular approval through a plebiscite, resulting in the law that emancipated the municipality, named Pontal do Paraná. Then, in 1997, the first mayoral and council elections were held. The first mayor, Dr. Hélio Gaissler de Queiroz, and his deputy, José Antônio da Silva, were elected, as well as councilors Benedito Ferreira, Donizete Feronimo de Oliveira, Edson Augusto Batista Salguiro, Conrado Gonsalves Pinto Filho, Gino Fernando Ronahak, Odair Serafim do Nascimento, Lorival Rocha Mantovani, Fernando Luiz Seren, and Murilo Bittencourt de Camargo Sobrinho. Various initiatives were undertaken, particularly in the legislative branch, with the creation of the Municipal Organic Law in December 1997, and many other important laws. On October 1, 2000, the then-vice mayor, Mr. José Antônio da Silva, was elected mayor, taking office on January 1, 2001. In the October 2004 elections, Mr. Rudisney Gimenes was elected, along with Mr. Izair Marcelino da Veiga, known as Lico, as his vice mayor, taking office on January 1, 2005. In the 2008 elections, Rudisney Gimenes was re-elected, along with another vice mayor, Rubens Marcelino da Veiga, known as Rubinho. In 2013, Edgar Rossi was elected, and in 2016, Marcos Fioravanti was elected. The economy is based on tourism-related activities, which employs the majority of the resident population and attracts thousands of people from all over the country during the summer season, which is organized by the state government in partnership with the city government. The summer season features entertainment stalls in the Shangri-lá and Ipanema resorts from December to March. In the remaining months, the economy is characterized by fishing and events such as the Mullet Festival, Shrimp Festival, Camacho (shrimp and beer festival), Crab Festival, Feast of Saint Joseph (the city's patron saint), hikers' gatherings, and many others. Geographically, however, Pontal do Paraná is located on the coastal plain of Praia de Leste, a fairly gentle, low-lying plain known as restinga (sandbank). The rainiest season is summer, with February receiving the most rainfall (350 mm). Winter is the driest season, with rainfall averaging 100 mm, with the municipality's annual average around 2,000 mm. The municipality borders Matinhos to the south, Paranaguá to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east and north, bordering Paranaguá Bay to the north. Paraná has 50 km of beaches, 23 km of which are located in Pontal do Paraná, making the municipality entirely dedicated to beach activities. It has 48 beach resorts, such as the popular Praia de Leste and Ipanema, the tranquil Shangri-lá, and Pontal do Sul, the main departure point for Ilha do Mel.
