The sad reality is that very few kids are ever expected to fulfill anything close to their potential. So they never do. It's a goddamned tragedy to be honest. I'm crying as I type this. Crying for the little kid I once was, forced into a system that none of us - not me, not any of the adults - understood. It's setup such that kids learn to obey, and to tolerate discomfort, and to be subjected to threats, and to be cowed by them, and to know hierarchy down to their DNA. For any smart student, and especially for the rationalists, school is hit and miss. Some teachers are good and the kids are happy. Some teachers not so good, and the kids are not so happy. But even the best classroom teachers cannot succeed when they are compelled to teach open systems through the solvency lens of closed systems learning.
