Dyevolution - A discovery of textile colour and sustainability

Dyevolution is a 3 year National Lottery Heritage Fund project exploring the history, science and making of textile dyes. Rooted in textile collections, research and practice, the project looks at how colour connects industry, environment, culture and creativity—past, present and future. Dyevolution examines how dyes have shaped textile production and everyday life. Central to the project is the transition from natural to early synthetic dyes, a moment of major technological change captured within 6 dye ledgers in our Collection. A moment that transformed industry, design and practice. Through archival research, experimentation and making, the project will bring together artists, researchers, volunteers and communities to explore and share historic colour knowledge.
