Salt marshes have the capacity to sequester carbon at a surprisingly high rate, up to 50 times greater than that of forests. Their contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change is therefore fundamental, but it risks being jeopardized by the degradation of these environments and the loss of land. In this new episode of the series dedicated to the Venice Lagoon, Andrea D'Alpaos, full professor at the Department of Geosciences at the University of Padua, delves into the ecosystem services of salt marsh habitats, explaining why maximum commitment is needed to protect these environments.
