David Pearce on San religion, rituals and the future of rock art research in South Africa
Dr. David Pearce is the Director of the the Rock Art Research Institute at Wits University in Johannesburg. On August 2nd, he will have a lecture on San religion and rock art at Origins Centre. He agreed to tell us a few words about this topic, and about the future of rock art research in South Africa. This lecture is part of a series on 'Rock Art and Symbolic Expression | A Southern African - French Dialogue', organised to complement the 'Wonders of Rock Art. Lascaux Cave and Africa' exhibition at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg. *** What is 'Wonders of Rock Art | Lascaux Cave and Africa' ? Until 1st October 2018, an exact reproduction of over 2 000 figures painted on the walls of the iconic French Lascaux cave is exhibited at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg. For the very first time, French rock art is displayed next to some of the world's oldest instances of human graphic expression, which earned Southern Africa the title of "Cradle of Humankind". Some artworks are dated up to 100.000 years ago... *** More on Sam Challis' lecture on Thursday 28 June: http://bit.ly/2NHifrd More on the "Wonders of Rock Art | Lascaux Cave and Africa" exhibition at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre: http://bit.ly/2rKx1Eu Follow us on Twitter: @IFAS_Research Follow us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2yxJvWp
