Comparing 5 Budget Pre-Amps: How Different Do They Really Sound?

I wanted to answer a question I hear constantly from musicians and engineers: do pre-amps actually matter? In this video, I test 5 affordable, bedroom-level pre-amps using the same sources and controlled conditions. The goal wasn't to find a “winner,” but more about understanding whether the differences people expect because of names and logos are really there in practice. I went into this test without knowing what the outcome would be, and in all honestly, the results surprised me. The pre-amps were far more similar than I expected, especially considering where some of this gear comes from. This was a practical experiment for my own setup, and a trial run for future tests with higher-end studio gear.
