Since 1981, back when he was still called "Jump Man" in the arcade classic "Donkey Kong," Mario has been jumping from game to game and from milestone to milestone. With more than 300 million video game copies sold, the series is the most successful video game franchise in the world. Mario's career is practically one long highlight, but his greatest successes, besides the DK arcade game, include "Super Mario Bros." for the NES, released in Europe in 1987 and selling over 40 million copies worldwide, ranking second among the best-selling video games of all time, surpassed only by "Wii Sports" bundled with the Wii; "Super Mario Bros. 3" for the NES, released in 1991; the first handheld platformer, "Super Mario Land," for the Game Boy in 1990; "Super Mario World" for the SNES in 1992 and "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" for the SNES in 1995; the first revolutionary 3D title, "Super Mario 64," for the Nintendo 64 in 1997; "Super Mario Sunshine" for the GameCube in 2002; the launch of the "New Super Mario Bros." series for the Nintendo DS in 2006; the breathtaking space adventure "Super Mario Galaxy" in 2007 and its sequel, "Super Mario Galaxy 2," in 2010; and the best-selling "New Super Mario Bros." Wii" 2009 for Wii, "Super Mario 3D Land" 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS, "New Super Mario Bros. U" 2012 and the 2.5D adventure "Super Mario 3D World" 2013 for WiiU and the open "Super Mario Odyssey" 2017 for Nintendo Switch. Genre excursions like the fun-racing series "Mario Kart," the party game series "Mario Party," the RPGs "Paper Mario" and "Mario & Luigi," and many more aren't even included in this analysis! Almost entirely without the involvement of "Super Mario" creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the team around producers Kenta Motokura and Yoshiaki Koizumi began developing "Super Mario Odyssey" for the Nintendo Switch immediately after completing the Wii U hit "Super Mario 3D World," which was released in 2013. The first scenes were shown in the official Switch trailer in October 2016, but the official unveiling of Mario's next big 3D adventure didn't take place until January 2017 during the major Nintendo Switch launch event. At this event, it was made clear that with "Super Mario Odyssey," they wanted to return to the roots of the 3D Mario games and focus on sandbox-style levels that, in addition to simple missions for Casual gamers as well as veterans are meant to be drawn to the somewhat more challenging missions. Despite foregoing a hub world, the game is thus more reminiscent of the beloved classics "Super Mario 64" and "Super Mario Sunshine." However, the developers aren't just drawing on elements from these two milestones, but also from more recent video games like "Super Mario 3D World" and "Super Mario Galaxy." Overall, Odyssey aims to create a kind of "Best of 3D Mario," while simultaneously bringing a breath of fresh air with many great ideas. Perhaps the most essential feature is "Cappy," who accompanies you around the world in your pursuit of Bowser, who wants to marry Princess Peach against her will. Cappy has the ability to "capture" enemies and certain objects, thus taking possession of them. For example, it's possible to control a Goomba or drive a Mario shell. Accompanied by the usual fantastic soundtrack, Mario's world tour could very well become his best adventure yet. The grand journey begins on October 27, 2017, when Mario's latest adventure is released for the Nintendo Switch. ▪ HASHTAGS: #domtendo #supermarioodyssey #smo #bestof
