Shostakovich Symphony No.7 in C major, Op. 60 “Leningrad”

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No.7 in C major, Op.60 “Leningrad” is one of his most monumental and historically significant compositions. Written during World War II and premiered in 1942, the symphony has come to symbolize both the suffering and resilience of the people of Leningrad under siege. Its vast scale and powerful imagery make it one of Shostakovich’s most recognized works worldwide. The opening Allegretto begins with a noble, almost pastoral theme, soon giving way to the famous “invasion theme” — a relentless, growing march that builds in intensity until it overwhelms the movement. The second movement, Moderato (poco allegretto), provides a striking contrast with its delicate textures and chamber-like intimacy, offering a moment of respite and reflection. The Adagio, the emotional core of the symphony, unfolds with deep lyricism and solemnity, filled with anguish yet also a profound sense of hope. The Finale (Allegro non troppo) surges forward with determination and triumph, closing the work in an atmosphere of resilience and victory. Together, these movements form not only a symphonic masterpiece but also a timeless testament to endurance, courage, and the human spirit. Timestamps: 00:00 I. Allegretto 26:01 II. Moderato.
