Quilt - for marimba and vibraphone, premiered by SoPou Percussion (Socrates Hwang and Pou I Chao).

Quilt emerged from listening closely to the sonic and expressive possibilities of the vibraphone and marimba that Kitty and Socrates brought into the rehearsal space. I gladly accepted their invitation to compose a work for the recital. Rather than writing a single continuous piece, I was drawn to the idea of creating a collection of short musical fragments—each with its own character and cultural resonance—woven together through improvisation. The work developed as a collaborative process. Both composer and performers contributed musical ideas, which we treated as individual “fabrics.” Together, we selected, shaped, and discussed how these materials might be assembled—stitched into a larger form—much like a patchwork quilt made from pieces of varying sizes, textures, patterns, and colors. Quilt currently consists of five sections: Bead, Dodola (Додола), Sutra, 「campanologist 鳴鐘師」, and Moktak 목탁. These may be performed in this order, with the possibility of Bead returning at the end to suggest a cyclical continuity. The structure of the work remains intentionally open. New sections may be added over time, and the arrangement of the “quilt” can be reconfigured into different forms, allowing the piece to evolve with each performance.
