Canine atopic dermatitis is an allergic inflammatory disease of hereditary origin. The animal is already atopic from the time it is inside its mother's womb. The allergy can manifest itself at any stage of the animal's life, whether as a puppy, adult or elderly. It all depends on the degree of exposure to allergens that this pet has according to the environment in which it lives. The skin of an atopic animal is different from that of a non-atopic animal. This skin is not completely intact; roughly speaking, it is full of little holes, which allows allergens to enter easily. When this skin comes into contact with the allergen, it becomes inflamed, changes the pH from acidic to alkaline, and fungi and bacteria begin to grow, causing itching or pruritus in the area. The atopic areas of the dog are: ears, armpits, groin, paws and perineum. The first cause would be the flea bite. The flea's saliva contains a protein that is a very important allergen. That is why it is important to use products to control fleas on your pet and to properly clean the environment. Vacuuming the house, kennel and dog bed, washing the bed and bedding, helps to control fleas. The second cause of allergies in dogs is household dust. Control is done by cleaning the environment with a vacuum cleaner and by washing the dog's bedding, toys, food bowls and clothes weekly. A dog with allergies should be bathed every week to remove all dust from its skin. The third cause is the protein in the food. This protein allergy can occur when a pet that is predisposed to the disease eats the same food for more than a year. The clinical signs of canine atopic dermatitis are: Otitis, paw licking, skin hyperpigmentation, skin hyperkeratosis, hair loss, small wounds on the body, seborrhea, etc. Canine atopic dermatitis can be diagnosed through clinical examination, cytology of the skin and ears, and information provided by the owner. Canine atopic dermatitis can be treated with anti-inflammatories for a short period of time, topical therapy, weekly bathing, and environmental control.
