The city was ruled by Portuguese during 15th Century. The ruler of this part known as Tulunad was a valorous Jain lady called Rani Abbakka Devi who successfully fought with the Portuguese in her rule for 4-5 decades! She fought several war with the help of Mogaveera community. Finally she was defeated by Portuguese and she ended her life before she was arrested by the army. So, she was considered the first woman to fight for Independence !
