[VIDEO DOCUMENTAL] THV 2011 - Federico Paté Tuki (Chile)

FEDERICO PATE TUKI Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui Valparaíso Region The rich Rapa Nui culture was nearly lost during the long years of forced labor, kidnappings, and humiliations to which this people was subjected. However, thanks to the songs that some Rapa Nui treasured and passed on to the younger generations, many of the island's ancestral traditions have survived to this day. Stories from ancient times, knowledge about nature and the universe, ritual and ceremonial wisdom, as well as feelings, are carried by the Riu and Uté, songs of Rapa Nui's oral tradition. Federico Paté Tuki has dedicated a large part of his life to transmitting these songs, collecting, composing, and performing them with traditional instruments. When one of these songs returns to his memory, he records his voice on his recorder so that his daughter can later transcribe the words on her computer, allowing new generations to learn them. The performance takes place at Tapati, Polynesia's main festival, where the entire community celebrates its traditions, and Don Federico plays a central role. It is for this tireless work of rescuing, enriching, and revitalizing Rapa Nui culture and music that Federico Paté has been recognized as a Living Human Treasure.
