Kohleausstieg: Milliardengeschenke statt Klimaschutz – MONITOR

Billions for less climate protection: The winners of the so-called coal phase-out law are the coal companies RWE and LEAG. Even Garzweiler II can be dredged for a long time. Scientists are calling this a golden handshake for the power plant operators. The compensation at stake is around eight billion euros. Another problem: According to the coal phase-out law, lignite-fired power plants are to be taken offline later than originally agreed. This means more lignite-fired power, more CO2 emissions. Calculations indicate an unnecessary additional emission of 130 million tons of CO2, far from the Paris climate targets. Several villages are also to be excavated to make way for the Garzweiler II open-cast lignite mine. Experts say this is unnecessary from an energy perspective and therefore dispensable. The villagers are fighting for their homes and intend to take their case all the way to the Federal Constitutional Court. The video reflects the research status as of July 2020.
