Beautifully flowering deciduous rhododendrons are also known as azaleas. Azaleas are native to Japan. They prefer slightly acidic soil, like conifers, and light partial shade. I have five azalea bushes in my garden (Cannon's DOUBLE, Homebush, and Juanita varieties). Three azalea bushes receive half-day sun, one bush receives light partial shade, and one receives full-time shade. I will replant the bush that doesn't bloom in the shade. I prepared the soil for planting the azaleas myself: 2 parts high-moor peat + 1 part sand + 1 part garden soil. I feed them three times per season: two times with a coniferous fertilizer in early spring and at the beginning of flowering, and a third time with potassium-magnesium nitrate after flowering. Azaleas are virtually disease-free. I also treat them for pests and diseases preventatively, along with my roses. I don't cover them for the winter; I mulch the tree trunks with peat or just dry soil. Azaleas bloom for about 3-4 weeks. Leaves appear on the bushes along with the flowers (Cannon's Double, Juanita) and after flowering on the Homebush Azalea bush. Azalea bushes are decorative both during flowering and in the fall. The leaves on azaleas turn crimson in the fall, making the bushes appear like flaming balls from afar. Azaleas are a wonderful addition to a beautiful garden!
