This Island Has Four Completely Different Histories
On Google Earth it looks like nothing. A thin strip of sand in the grey-blue Caspian Sea, barely wider than a road in some sections, no reason to stop and look. Then you zoom in. There are skeletons of buildings. Two helipads. Vehicle tracks going nowhere. Radio masts. The remnants of something that was clearly once significant and is now just rusting back into the sand. This island has four completely separate histories layered on top of each other. The people who named it called themselves sea robbers. Then came a Russian Imperial leper colony. Then a Soviet military installation hidden behind a nature reserve designation. And finally, a single man who lived there alone after everyone else left. Fishing to survive. Receiving occasional helicopter drops. Nobody knows when he left. Nobody knows definitively whether he did. The island is called Ogurja Ada. It belongs to one of the most closed countries in the world. And from the right altitude on Google Earth, it still looks like nothing at all.
