Approximately three thousand aspiring sanitation workers have applied for the selection process launched by the Veritas Group, the multi-service company that manages waste collection in the 44 municipalities of the metropolitan city of Venice, out of a staffing requirement of approximately 150. Registration closes today (Friday), and the aptitude test will be held in the fall. Those who pass will be placed on a list from which, in the coming years, staff will be recruited for both permanent and fixed-term contracts to work in one of the municipalities where Veritas manages sanitation services. The high number of applications has highlighted the continuing crisis in the labor market in the Venice area: even a job with a starting salary of €1,000, which can then be increased based on seniority, family responsibilities, or specialization, appears highly attractive. The selection process will involve a wide range of people: high school graduates and those without a high school diploma, but also graduates, young and old, men and women, Italians and immigrants. In short, the profile of an aspiring street cleaner is not easily defined these days. The selection process stems from a union agreement aimed at stabilizing workers who already work for Veritas as seasonal workers, but also to offset the exodus facilitated by the "Quota 100" measure. The company, in fact, cannot estimate how many people will retire under this measure, but it believes many will participate, having also set up specific ramps to encourage staff turnover.
