Stavrovouni Monastery is located on a rocky peak, 750 meters above sea level, about 40 km from Larnaca and Nicosia. It is worth it just to go to the top, observe the landscape and walk around the square. The views from the top are breathtaking in all directions and you can see the city of Larnaca and the coast in the distance. Stavrovouni Monastery was founded in the 4th century by Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great, who left a relic of the Holy Cross in the monastery. The monks here have strict rules similar to those on Mount Athos in Greece. Women are not allowed to enter the monastery, but there is a beautiful little church right next to it that women can visit. Men visiting the monastery must be appropriately dressed, but may not use a camera or video. In contrast, the monastery of Agia Varvara at the foot of Stavrovouni is open to all visitors and the monks here are known for their iconographic skills.
